The Open Fuel Standard Act of 2011View a PDF of the Open Fuel Standard ActA bipartisan group of US Representatives introduced a bill that could expand fueling options at gas station's nationwide. The Open Fuel Standard Act (HR 1687) would require that 50% of new automobiles in 2014, 80% in 2016, and 95% in 2017, would be able to operate on nonpetroleum fuels in addition to or instead of petroleum based fuels. The choice of fuels includes flex fuel (gasoline, ethanol and methanol), natural gas, hydrogen, biodiesel, plug-in electric, and fuel cell. Lawmakers say the requirement will provide certainty to investors to produce alternative fuels and fueling stations. Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL19) introduced the bill. Cosponsors so far: Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD6), Howard Berman (D-CA28), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR3), Bruce Braley (D-IA1), Tom Cole (R-OK4), Eliot Engel (D-NY17), Steve Israel (D-NY2), Henry Johnson (D-GA4), David Loebsack (D-IA2), Collin Peterson (D-MN7), and Dennis Ross (R-FL12). Robert Zubrin argues that the United States is subsidizing a war against itself because of its dependence on oil, a resource controlled by its enemies. He says that if Congress passed a law requiring all new cars sold in the United States to be flexible fueled, OPEC's control on the world's transportation fuel supply would be diminished. This event was hosted by the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, DC. |
